Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee (Genesis 12:1). God was now to abandon the nations, and begin to deal with one particular nation, the descendants of Abram through Isaac and Jacob. The entire balance of the Book of Genesis (chapters 12 to 50) is therefore occupied with four men: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph.
